Instrument Needle Valves

Instrument Needle Valves

Instrument needle valves give manual flow adjustment and shut-off in small-bore process, sampling, gauge and analyser lines. A stem with a tapered or regulating tip is driven into the seat by a fine-pitch thread, so flow can be adjusted gradually as well as isolated. TSI sources instrument needle valves against your specification (body material, bonnet design, stem tip and packing, end connections, pressure, flow capacity and documentation) through qualified manufacturers and stockists.

Technical values shown are representative ranges across comparable manufacturer series and must not be interpreted as the combined rating of a single valve configuration. Maximum pressure, maximum temperature and flow capacity are not simultaneous ratings. Exact ratings are confirmed against the selected manufacturer, size, material, packing and end connections.

Pressure class is not fixed by bonnet type. Standard severe-service union, screwed and locked-bonnet designs are typically rated up to 6,000 psig; selected union, forged and locked-bonnet designs are also made for 10,000 psig and are listed in family C.

Images on this page are representative illustrations of each product type, not photographs of supplied items.

B. Union, Screwed and Locked-Bonnet Needle Valves

Severe-service designs with a separate bonnet, larger orifices and, on selected designs, packing located below the stem threads and a non-rotating stem. Union, screwed and locked bonnets are different constructions: a union bonnet is joined to the body by a union nut, a screwed bonnet is threaded into the body, and a locked bonnet is threaded and then retained by a separate locking device.

Working pressureUp to 6,000 psig (414 bar) in 316 stainless steel at 100°F (38°C), depending on series, for standard severe-service designs (10,000 psig designs are listed in family C). Alloy 400 is rated lower (about 5,000 psig / 345 bar) and titanium about 3,500 psig (241 bar) on selected ranges. Exact rating is confirmed by manufacturer and configuration.
Temperature-65°F to 450°F (-54°C to 232°C) with PTFE packing. D. Special Service and Options

Specified in your enquiry and available through sourcing on request. Availability depends on the manufacturer, range and model.

  • Sour-gas service: a requirement confirmed against the ordered model, material and documentation (ANSI/NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156).
  • Special cleaning for oxygen-enriched service (ASTM G93 Level C) where offered for the selected model.
  • Low fugitive emissions: API 624 type-test certification on selected ranges; certificate availability is confirmed for the ordered configuration.
  • Stem tip options: vee, regulating and soft-seat (PCTFE); ball tip on selected ranges.
  • Higher-temperature packing: PEEK or flexible graphite, by range.
  • Pneumatic actuation on selected severe-service ranges.
  • Panel-mounting versions.
  • Alternative body materials (Alloy 400, Alloy C-276, titanium) and other special alloys, sourced on request.

These are requirements to state in your enquiry, not options that are available together on one valve.

Technical considerations
  • Needle valves suit manual flow adjustment and isolation. They are not a substitute for a control valve in an automatic loop.
  • Working pressure is the lowest applicable rating of the body, stem seal, tip, packing, end connection and tube, reduced for temperature. The maximum series pressure is not the working pressure of the installed valve.
  • Stem tip sets the duty: vee tips for shut-off and general use, regulating tips for finer flow adjustment, soft-seat tips for sealing against a polymer seat. A maximum Cv does not describe adjustment quality; Cv versus turns is published for some series and requested per model.
  • Packing sets the temperature range: PTFE or PFA to 450°F (232°C), PEEK 500°F to 600°F (260°C to 316°C), flexible graphite up to 1,200°F (649°C) on selected configurations. Graphite limits differ by series, size and alloy. Check tip and packing limits separately.
  • Published Cv values are for the valve itself. End connections, especially small-bore tube ends, can restrict flow below the published Cv.
  • NPT and ISO/BSP tapered threads are not interchangeable. State the thread standard and the end sex (male or female) for the inlet and outlet.
  • Sour service needs material selection to ANSI/NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, assessed against the actual conditions. State it in the enquiry.
  • Oxygen-enriched service needs special cleaning. State it in the enquiry.
How to specify your enquiry

Send, for each item: duty (isolation or manual regulation) and required shut-off performance; working and design pressure, minimum and maximum design temperature, and process fluid (including chlorides, H2S, CO2 or oxygen where present); body material and grade, with wetted parts if different; bonnet type; stem tip and packing; pattern (straight, angle, panel-mounting); inlet and outlet connection (thread standard and sex, or tube outside diameter and wall thickness); required Cv and allowable pressure drop if critical; special requirements (sour service, cleaning, low emissions); documentation required (for example EN 10204 3.1 material certificates, traceability, test records, general arrangement drawing); quantity.

Standards note

Small instrument valves of this type fall within the scope of MSS SP-99-2023 (steel and alloy instrument valves of NPS 2 and smaller, up to 15,000 psi at 100°F). The standard does not certify any individual product. Designs are generally manufacturer-proprietary, so dimensions and ratings are confirmed per supplier; MSS SP-99 refers code applications to MSS SP-105. Tapered NPT threads are to ASME B1.20.1 and ISO/BSP tapered threads to ISO 7-1 / EN 10226-1.
