Hose Assemblies — Engineering Overview
Flexible hose assemblies bridge rigid piping runs where thermal expansion, vibration isolation, equipment alignment, or connection to moving machinery make a fixed pipe run impractical. In upstream, midstream, and process-plant service, hose assembly selection is a materials-and-connections decision as much as a size decision: core material, reinforcement type, end-fitting style, and pressure–temperature rating must be matched to the process media, service temperature, and mechanical environment together — not selected independently of one another.
Three factors govern safe hose assembly selection in industrial service. Working pressure at the actual service temperature: every hose construction de-rates as temperature rises above its room-temperature rating, so the printed “vacuum to X psig” figure applies at room temperature unless a de-rating table says otherwise. Minimum bend radius: static (fixed) installation and dynamic (repeated flexing) service carry different minimum radii, and operating tighter than the applicable figure shortens service life regardless of the pressure rating. End-connection compatibility: a hose correctly rated for pressure and temperature is still the wrong choice if its end connection does not match the equipment it is joining.
Metal hose and hose-assembly design, manufacture, and testing in this catalogue follow the requirements of ISO 10380 (Pipework — Corrugated Metal Hoses and Hose Assemblies), which covers size range, pressure rating, and temperature de-rating factors for corrugated metal hose. PTFE-lined, stainless-braided hose follows the SAE 100R14 specification for smooth-bore PTFE hose construction. Pressure–temperature de-rating across the range follows ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) principles. For sour-service or H₂S-containing environments common in upstream Gulf production, material selection should additionally be verified against NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 before specification.
