Instrument Ball Valves
Instrument ball valves give quarter-turn shut-off and switching in small-bore process, sampling and control lines. They are designed for fully open or fully closed service and are not intended for throttling. TSI sources instrument ball valves against your specification (body material, seat and packing, end connections, pressure, flow pattern and documentation) through qualified manufacturers and stockists.
Technical values shown are representative ranges across comparable manufacturer series and must not be interpreted as the combined rating of a single valve configuration. Exact ratings are confirmed against the selected manufacturer, size, material, seat and end connections.
A. One-Piece Instrumentation Ball Valves
One-piece body and one-piece ball stem with encapsulated seat and packing. Compact, low dead space, suited to sampling, analytical and instrument lines.
| Working pressure | Up to 3,000 psig (207 bar), depending on size and flow pattern. Vented and lubrication-free configurations may have reduced pressure ratings; for example, some 40G variants are rated 500 psig, while certain 40 Series lubrication-free versions are rated 200 psig. Exact rating is confirmed by manufacturer and configuration. |

| Size | 1/16 in. to 3/4 in. (3 mm to 12 mm) tube ends; 1/8 in. to 1/2 in. NPT |
| Body material | 316 stainless steel; brass and Alloy 400 in some ranges; Alloy C-276 on request |
| Seat and packing | Modified PTFE, PTFE, PFA or UHMWPE, by range |
| Flow coefficient (Cv) | Approximately 0.05 to 12, by size |
| End connections | Double-ferrule tube fittings, female and male NPT, ISO/BSP tapered, O-ring or metal-gasket face seal on request |

B. Multipurpose Bar-Stock Ball Valves
Bar-stock body with floating ball and live-loaded or adjustable stem seals. Higher pressure and flow than the one-piece type.
| Working pressure | Up to 6,000 psig (414 bar). With tube ends the rating is limited by the tube rating |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Approximately -65°F to 450°F (-54°C to 232°C), depending on seat; narrower on some ranges |
| Size | 1/16 in. to 1 in., by range |
| Body material | 316 stainless steel; brass in some ranges; Alloy 400 and Alloy C-276 on request |
| Seat | PTFE, PCTFE or PEEK |
| Flow coefficient (Cv) | Up to approximately 6 in common ranges; up to approximately 14 in the largest |
| Flow patterns | 2-way; 3-way diverter (bottom entry); angle in some ranges |

C. High-Pressure Ball Valves
For pressures above the multipurpose range. Two design types: trunnion-mounted ball with spring-loaded seats, and bar-stock floating-ball valves with PEEK seats.
| Working pressure | Up to 10,000 psig (690 bar) with PEEK seats; up to 6,000 psig (414 bar) with PCTFE seats. The valve rating is the lowest of body, seat and end-connection ratings |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Typically -40°F to 450°F (-40°C to 232°C), depending on seat; some ranges -65°F to 400°F or up to 500°F with PEEK |
| Size | Trunnion type: 1/8 in. to 1/2 in. (6 mm to 12 mm). Bar-stock type: up to 1 in., with lower pressure at larger sizes |
| Body material | 316 stainless steel; Alloy 400 on request |
| Seat | PEEK, PCTFE, PTFE or PVDF, by range |
| Flow patterns | 2-way and 3-way |

D. Three-Piece and Swing-Out Ball Valves
Three-piece body allows seats, seals and ball to be replaced with the valve in the line. Suited to larger bores and service-intensive duties.
| Working pressure | Up to 3,000 psig (207 bar) for smaller bores; typically 1,000 psig to 2,500 psig for larger or swing-out designs |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Approximately -20°F to 450°F (-29°C to 232°C); PEEK-seated versions to 600°F (316°C) in some ranges |
| Size | 1/8 in. to 2 in., by range |
| Body material | 316 stainless steel (cast CF8M/CF3M or bar stock) |
| Seat | PTFE, reinforced PTFE or PEEK |
| Flow patterns | 2-way; 3-way in some ranges |
| End connections | Tube fittings, NPT, BSP, socket weld and butt weld (tube or pipe), by range |

TSI-10-011Special Service & Configuration Options
- Instrument ball valves are for fully open or fully closed service. Do not use them to throttle flow.
- Pressure rating is the lowest of the body, seat, packing and end-connection ratings. Tube ends are also limited by the tube rating.
- Seat and packing material set the temperature range. Check both.
- Tube-end connections are manufacturer-specific. State the tube-fitting system the valve must match.
- Sour service needs material selection to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. State it in the enquiry.
- Oxygen or high-purity service needs special cleaning and lubricant-free assembly, which lowers the pressure rating. State it in the enquiry.
Send, for each item: size and end connection; pressure and temperature; body material; seat and packing; flow pattern (2-way, 3-way, angle, multi-port); handle or actuation; special requirements (NACE, fire-safe, cleaning); documentation required (for example material test certificates and traceability); quantity.
Small instrument valves of this type, including ball valves, fall within the scope of MSS SP-99-2023 (steel and alloy valves of NPS 2 and smaller, up to 15,000 psi at 100°F). Designs are generally manufacturer-proprietary, so dimensions and ratings are confirmed per supplier.
